The banking business in Franklin Grove was started in 1880 by Conrad Durkes in his general store which was located in the former George S. Ives Variety Store building. He had a safe in the back of his general store and people of the community would bring him their money to keep for them in his safe, for which he would issue them receipts. Gradually, he began to make loans to people of the community.
In 1888 the state legislature enacted a law which allowed application for a charter to operate a bank as a corporation. Mr. Durkes felt that it would be better to operate as a corporate bank rather than to continue as a private bank.
The state charter was received on June 6, 1889. Business was started in a building that is now the north end of the present bank building. In 1909 the bank received its second 20-year charter and in 1929 it received a 99-year charter. Today the Franklin Grove Bank is a full service community bank.
