This area is primarily a military area now that can be (like all other open military areas) served by helicopters. The former agricultural airstrip was abandoned for decades. During the earlier part of the civil war in Syria, government forces used part of the area for helicopter operations. [There's little evidence that it was technically a helicopter *base* of any kind or ever had aircraft stationed there] The locals may refer to this military area as an airfield only for historic reasons but there's no information on what they call it locally.

It was overrun by rebels in November 2012 and subsequently overtaken by ISIS in 2014. It is still in ISIS control as of June 2016, but there is no evidence they are using it in any military capacity (although they may be). The historic dirt airstrip itself has been cut up and no longer exists in it's former decades-old footprint as shown in the outline. Satellite imagery is years old, so we have no idea if any part of it still exists as a useable airstrip. It's location provides defense against ground operations from the north of al Sukariya and al Bukaman, but this would be unimportant to the current ISIS forces controlling the area.
