Nikos Gatsos was born in Arcadia Asea from farmers George and Vasiliki Vassilopoulou Gatsos. At age five he lost his father, who, from the first immigrants to America, died on the ship and flew over the Atlantic.
The only book published during his lifetime is the poetic composition "Amorgos" (Eagle, 1943), which is leading the creation of the Greek surrealism with huge influence on younger poets. (See: Koyrtobik Demosthenes, Greek Postwar Writers, Ed. Pataki, 1995). Has since published three more poems in "Elegy" (1946, approx Literary Times) and "Knight and Death" (1947, approx Small Notebook), which from 1969 onwards contained in the book "Amorgos" and the "Song of old" (1963, approx Postino), dedicated to George Seferis.
The great contribution of Gatsos, however, is the song as a lyricist. Brought poetry in verse and succeeded mainly through its collaboration with Manos Hadjidakis, the rule of poetic song. Also cooperated with Mikis Theodorakis, Stavros Xarhakos, the municipality Moutsi, Lucian Kilaidoni, Christodoulos Halari, and younger composers. Writing usually above the melody, the first being "PAPER MOON" spoke to the hearts of the world many individual songs, as well as outstanding to 45 rpm discs, as well as separate circles as the "Mythology" (1965), the "One noon "(1966), the" Back "(1970), the" Home sweet home "(1972), the" Drosoulites "1975," Immortality "(1976)," The absurd "(1976), the" rebetiko " (1983), the "Eleventh command" (1985) or "Reflections" (1993). The entire lyrical work is concentrated in the volume "All songs" (ed. Pataki, 1999).
