An exploration core hole tapped an aquifer here in the 1970's and the water was under such extreme artesian pressure that it pushed the drill rig off of the setup and a 200 foot jet of water (geyser) was reported to have shot out for several weeks finally lessening in flow.

The drillers tried without success to stop the water flow and it was decided to construct a water-box (square cement open top box) around the drill hole in order to eventually be able to utilize the water.

Originally the volume of water was so high that water ran on the surface of the arroyo almost to Suaqui Grande, Sonora (approx. 25 kilometers linear distance/approx. 35 kilometers following the arroyo).

This well has not stopped producing water from the time it was drilled, although the volume has lessened.
