Susa, modern Persian Shush, was the historical capital of Elam and Elymais, and one of the main royal centers of the Old Persian Achaemenid Empire, when it was the favorite winter residence of Persian kings. The city was also important under the Parthian Arsacids and the Neo-Persian Sasanids (when it became an Eastern Christian bishopric), but declined during the early Islamic period. The ancient remains have been excavated by French archaeologists starting in the late 19th century.
