The word 'Tipam' is a Tai-Ahom origin means a high land on the bank of river Burhi-Dihing and good for dry season crops. According to some, it is a Veddid word 'Ti' means river 'Pam' very fast flowing i.e., a fast flowing or wide speedy river. Tipam was a part of ancient Dimalang Ganarajya, Halali Ganarajya, Kundidesha, Kundila also under the Kachari king Bicharpatipha, Mahamanikyapha etc. The Naga Chiefs of Bardoiya and Namchang regions also collect taxes from this region. According to a few foreign histories, particularly of Myanmer, Thai etc, the Tai princes from those countries after invading this area, used to collect taxes from here including the Sadiya region. We found such references with Prince Siukhanpha of Muangmao sometimes in A.D. 11th century. The first Tai-Ahom king Chaolung Siukapha crossed Tipam through Bagariguri (Jaypur) sometimes in A.D. 1228 along with his nobles. He put up one of his nobles here and Kanggan Bargohain by name to rule this area. He also met a good number of Morans here on his way to Mung-dun-chun-kham (means a country full of garden of golds) the newly created state at that time. He embraced them to his fold and gave them some important assignments. One pair of such Morans were given the name "LANMAKHRU", means Dealer of beautiful brinjals. Later this clan members were 'Barphukans' in the Royal Ahom Court such as -Haldhithenga Barphukan, Bandar Barphukan, Lambodar Barphukan, etc. They were also offered -Khargharia Phukan, Bhitaruwal Phukan, Barchetia, Rajkhowa etc. In Tipam area, the famous Ghilajhari Treaty between the Tai-Ahom king Jaydhvajsimha and Mughal Nabab accepted here in A.D. 1663. Close to Tipam there were numbers of Hill Salt Brines, which are extracted by the Nagas and Kacharis, later taken possession by the Tai-Ahoms. In medieval period, Tipam region was under one of the Princes of Tai-Ahom king with the assistance of one Gohain and a Rajkhowa.
