Green Block, The Exchange Building

The Green Block was built for Alexander Alfred Green in 1889 and was designed by the architect John Teague. Green was the manager of Garesche, Green & Company, which had taken over the Wells, Fargo & Company’s Bank in 1873 and was the largest private banking house in British Columbia throughout the 1880s. The two-story Italianate-style brick building was also known as the Exchange Building, due to the tenancy of the Victoria Stock Exchange from 1928 to 1930.

John Teague's other architectural work in Victoria includes City Hall, St. Anne's Academy, Burnes House and the Church of Our Lord.
