Built in 1955 as a hydroelectric scheme and currently generating approximately 30MW per year.

The Cobb Reservoir has relatively good fishing for small (1 - 1.5kg) brown and rainbow trout. The Cobb River that feeds it from the western end is one of the cleanest and clearest rivers in New Zealand. There is a rough track that follows the river upstream and where this track leaves the reservoir can be found some of the oldest marine fossils in New Zealand at 540 million years old.
