One of the few houses in Stanley Park and built around 1908, it now operates as Pooh Corner Daycare, but it used to be a private home.

Built as a family residence for Cecil & Sophie Merritt, Sophie was the grand-daughter of Sir Charles Tupper, one of Canada’s earliest Prime Ministers. In 1947, the City purchased the house and it became the home of the Park Superintendent for Stanley Park. It is now listed on the City’s Heritage Register as a Heritage ‘B’ building.

Cecil & Sophie's eldest son Charles Cecil Ingersoll Merritt himself was born on the kitchen table of the house Nov. 10, 1908. Later, Merritt won a Victoria Cross for his bravery during the ill-fated raid on Dieppe on Aug. 19, 1942.
