Zoo was founded at this place in 1930 (the first one in Upper Silesia), then as a private garden. In 1937 city started to pay for maintenance in exchange for letting public visit it. Destroyed completely during WWII, rebuilt in 1953. Destroyed again by flood in 1997, rebuilding started in 1998 and was completed over a few years.
Member of European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA), it is one of 10 largest zoos in Poland.
