This was the site of Lock & Dam #48, part of the 1929 Canalization Project. The lock chamber was 110' wide by 600' long, and was one of the few locks to feature gates that rolled in and out, rather than the common miter gates. The dam was of the old wicket-style, with a "bear trap" on the Kentucky side. With the completion of the Uniontown Locks & Dam, Locks 49 (Uniontown, KY), 48, and 47 (Newburgh, Ind.), with their associated dams, were dynamited.
