Constructed in 1960, Newtonbrook Plaza was the site of the first high rise commercial building in North York, with the opening of an 11 storey office building in 1971.

Silvercore Properties, the owner of the property, has made application to redevelop the site. Plans include three blocks with an eight storey base. The south block would feature two buildings 36 and 28 stories high, while the middle block would have one 44 story building. The north block would be developed with another 36 storey building. A total of 1674 residential units are proposed. In addition, it is proposed to relocate the existing Food Basics grocery store to the south block.

The Food Basics store closed in early 2019.
