It actually works! CD-R King Kenko Hands-free Can Opener

You can’t help but snicker upon hearing CD-R King‘s home lifestyle brand “Kenko.” Then again, it’s probably not as bad as their brazen attempt to ride on a comicbook franchise in the form of their Stark line of appliances.

So when I first saw the Kenko Hands-Free Can Opener, I did snicker a bit. And then I got curious. After all, it was just 380 pesos. And it promised to do what those As-Seen-On-TV hands-free can openers promise to do for four times the price.

And… whaddaya know? It actually works!



The Kenko Hands-Free can opener is supposed to make your can-opening tasks real easy. Just set it on top of your can, press the big button, and it will open the can by itself without you having to exert any effort. You get to enjoy the sight of this device as it twirls around the can on its own, cutting the top open.

Which it did. That is, after some trial and error on how to properly align the can’s cutter head against the edge of the can. I still couldn’t quite figure out what the best way was to set it quickly against the can edge, but it didn’t take long to stumble upon it. And once the cutter was properly nudged against the can edge, off it went (otherwise, well, you’re just cutting into thin air).



The Kenko requires four AA batteries. That’s a bit reassuring considering that I would expect a device like this to demand quite a bit of torque.

Aaaand… the cans and lids won’t have sharp edges that can hurt you. That’s a plus.


No sharp edges!

Couple of quibbles:

1. Yeah, it takes some figuring out to understand exactly how to align the cutter head against a can’s edge in the right way. Then again, you get that too with other can openers, electric or otherwise;

2. It won’t automatically shut off after opening up the lid. You’ll have to press the big button again to shut it off. I would have expected such a device to at least know when its mission has already been accomplished.

And of course I still don’t know whether this product will last a long time (the curse of a brand that comes from CD-R King). But let’s see how it goes.

Besides, at just 380 pesos, I think it’s a steal as it is. So I’m now thinking of getting one for my mom too. At least she wouldn’t know what a Kenko is…
