This was a two-level road/rail bridge, completed in 1903. The railway uses the top level, road traffic uses the single-lane lower level. A new road bridge has now been built to the West of the old one , but the old bridge will continue to carry the railway.

a joint single-lane road-rail bridge spanning the Awatere River which was in service until October 2007. A two lane road bridge has replaced the road bridge component.[6] The railway line continues over the old historic bridge which is the Main North Line and a daily service in each direction of the TranzCoastal passenger express stops in Seddon.
