military, place with historical importance, boat, United States Navy
Built by ELCO at their Bayonne Shipyard towards the end of the Second World War, PT-615 entered US Navy service in September 1945 as a member of Motor Torpedo Squadron 42. Slated for service in support of the planned Invasion of Mainland Japan, the cessation of hostilities brought PT-678 and her crew a much different service experience.
Used primarily for public displays, outings and "Thank You" functions for American citizens who bought war bonds following the war, PT-678 and her squadron deployed as far afield as Syracuse, New York before shaping a course for Norfolk where she was deactivated in January 1946. Stripped of her armaments and offered for public sale, PT-615 found her way into the ownership of Clark Gable following an extensive conversion into a yacht by her builders she began her new career under the name "Tarbaby VI".
Used by Gable as his personal yacht into the 1950's, PT-615 was passed between a number of subsequent owners until being purchased by Fleet Obsolete and restored to her her weather deck. She is presently stored out of the water awaiting topside restoration.
