Built at the Higgins Industries New Orleans Shipyard in 1943, PT-459 entered US Navy service in late January 1944 for her shakedown cruise and was formally assigned to Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron 30 (MTBRON-30) on February 15th, 1944 for duty in the European Theatre.

After crossing the Atlantic Ocean in convoy as supercargo aboard an American LST, PT-459 and her crew were activated for duty in the highly disputed English Channel. Operating in direct support of Allied Forces as they prepared and finally invaded Fortress Europe at Normandy in June 1944, PT-459 and her squadronmates saw frequent action against their counterparts in the German Kriegsmarine as well as against the Luftwaffe as they fought to secure the vital waterway.

Returned to the United States in June 1945 following the cessation of hostilities in Europe, PT-459 and her crew were pierside at the Brooklyn Navy Yard preparing for their transfer to the Pacific Ocean when word was received of the Japanese Surrender and the end of the Second World War. Deactivated along with her squadron from US Navy service in November 1945, PT-459 was stripped of her armament and sold to private buyers who converted her for use as a commercial fishing and sightseeing boat. Serving in her new career for several decades, the PT-459 eventually found herself stored out of the water at the Scarano Boat Yard in Albany, NY where she was purchased by Fleet Obsolete in 2009. Subsequently moved by barge to her current location, PT-459 has been cocooned against the elements and is currently awaiting preservation.
