Viola is a census-designated place west of Lassen Peak. The population of Viola, as of 2010, is 94. The town started in 1888 after the post office opened. Benjamin Loomis was the first settler who homesteaded by Lassen Peak in the Viola area. The town was named for Benjamin's mother.
The town is now a visitor center and a stopping point for travelers. Campgrounds dot the Viola area in the remote regions.
