History: In 1988 The Deputy Commissioner, Chittagong, Mr.M.A.Mannan and some other elites of Chittagong, primarily took initiative to establish a private Zoo at Foy’s lake, chittagong for the purpose of Recreation, Education and Research on zoo animals which ultimately came into being on the 28th days of February 1989 and thereafter it was opened for the visitors.
Area: Initially 4.90 acres of land was allocated by the Government, Peoples Republic of Bangladesh, which afterwards increased to 6 acres. The zoo authority is trying to increase the same. This area is hilly and very gently sloping.
Geographical location: It is located at the heart of most beautiful areas of Chittagong with great beauty overlooking magnificent views of coastal scenery, uplands, lochs and mountains.

Executive Body: Executive committee consists of 30 members, of which 10 are local elite and renowned businessmen, while the rest members are from higher govt. officials and private entrepreneurs. Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong holds the presidency by dint of designation.
Zoo Populations: Initially there were 5 different species (Number of animals were 23), but now the no of species has been increased to 67, among them 32 are Mammals, 28 are Birds and rest of 7 are Reptiles. Total stock position of Zoo is now 367.These inventory are collected from different zoos of Bangladesh.
Visiting Time: 8 am to Sunset.
Entry Fee : 20 taka per head
Visitors : Av. 1200/day
Feeding and Treatment: Veterinary Officer cum Curator carry out both Nutrition and Treatment of zoo animals
Feeding Time: Mammals -
* Primate (Monkey, Langur etc) - 2 times daily
*Herbivores (Spotted Deer, Samber Deer, Barking Deer etc) - 2 times daily
* Carnivores (Lion, Tiger, Fishing Cat etc) - Once daily
Birds * 2 times daily
Reptiles- * Snake, Crocodiles etc – Once in a week
* Turtles – 2 times daily.
Education and Research: Students from different educational institution includes Schools, Colleges, and Universities especially veterinary students are used to come here to know about the captive animals. They are guided by the Veterinary officer cum Curator. Visitors gather information from display board. They are also going to create awareness among peoples about Biodiversity by media announcement, developing zoo website, sticker, and poster etc.
Some research works have also been carried out by different researchers from veterinary college and zoology department of Chittagong University.
Recently the Authority has taken some decisions for modernization of zoo by establishing virtual museum with audio visual facilities as a common learning centre for mass people as well as well equipped veterinary hospital etc.
Problem: There are a number of problems what Chittagong Zoo been carrying through including scarcity of land, etc. Among these scarcity of land and insufficient development budget is the main problem.
Entrance fee remaining the only source of earning for zoo. All expenses of operational and developmental activities of zoo are carried out from this income. Due to scarcity of money, they could not able to undertake any kind of essential project for development of zoo. If Government or any other organization come forward to collaborate or extent their support for improvement of zoo, they will more efficiently be able to conserve more endangered species of animal kingdom and develop this zoo up to a great extent.
