This is the original path of the Great North Road built by the Romans. The Great North Road now runs slightly to the north - it splits at The Sun public house to the south. Follow the ridge up to the north, and it re-joins the A1 and A638 at Redhouse interchange. There are plans recently to make a feature of the Roman Ridge.
