The university started in 1958, it is the only medical college within South-East Heilongjiang Province. There are eight affiliated hospitals under the university. Two direct affiliated hospitals serve the city of Mudanjiang with more than 2000 beds. Hongqi Hospital which is located next to the university is a 1200 bedded general hospital.
