Canterbury farmer Charles Upham was one of New Zealand’s most famous heroes of the Second World War, winning a Victoria Cross and bar for courage. After the war he farmed for many years at the mouth of the Conway River. This statue was erected in nearby Amberley in 1997.

Charles Hazlitt Upham, VC & Bar (21 September 1908 – 22 November 1994) was a New Zealand soldier who was awarded the Victoria Cross (VC) twice during the Second World War - for gallantry in Crete in May 1941, and in Egypt, in July 1942.
