  • Ras village of Borsad taluka remained in the fore front during the freedom struggle. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was to give a lecture in Ras as a precesor to the Dandi-March. But the police machinery was geared up on that day. Sardar Patel and other leaders of the village started the public meeting under a big banyan tree at the entrance of the village. Within minutes, the first class magistrate of Borsad himself came with the arrest warrant of Sardar. Sardar was brought to Borsad and sent to prison for three months. This incident catapulted Ras village to the national map overnight and Ras was inscribed in golden letters in the annuals of Indian Freedom Struggle. In 1930, people of Ras joined hands with a number of other villages of Borsad taluka in the Satyagrah against paying taxes. They did not give an inch away even in the face of arrests, seizer, lathi charge. Lands in the villages were resumed, household properties and livestock were auctioned but the people did not relent. The bravery shown by the people in the days of freedom struggle is still intact. The politicians, businessmen, educationists, religious personalities have let glory to the village. Thus, Ras is important in historical perspective too.
