The Bass Lake dump site was operated by the Townships of Rolph, Buchanan, Wylie & McKay (now incorporated into the Town of Laurentian Hills) until around 1990. According to Ontario Provincial regulations the land cannot be used for other purposes until 25 years after the closure of the dump site. Regular inspections are made of the site by professional third-party engineers and the reports are available to the public at the Town offices. Groundwater contamination resulted in the requirement for the Town to puchase certain adjacent lands a few years after the closure of the site in order that all contamination be limited to lands owned by the Town.
