Serou represents confluence not only of two big rivers -Irel and Chakpi -but also of several ethnic groups in South Asia. The village is home to Manipuris, Bengalis, Nepalis, and Kukis, and it upholds the tradition of mutual tolerance and brotherhood that is very rare in other parts of the world. Any one interested in studying mutual coexistence of people from completely different ethno-linguistic and religious background should visit Serou as this village houses people of the major religions in the world -Hindu, Christian and Muslims.

Folks, I am utterly enthralled by the comments that have been pouring in about Serou. OK, this is an astounding place, trust me! Yes, you will immediately fall in love with the nature there, to begin with. The scenic beauty made possible by the submit of the two rivers I mentioned previously -Irel and Chakpi; vegetables, especially mustard leaf grown on the fertile alluvial soil, known locally as Serou Hangam (meaning mustard leaf grown in Serou), black-eye pea (Hawai Mubi in Manipuri), and wild beans (Yongchak in Manipuri). What makes Serou Hangam special is that it is very rich in flavor and protein mainly because of the natural fertilizer that farmers there use. Now mix this green leaf with a little bit of ash (yea, utti), yongchak, ngari (dried fish)and ask granny what's on dinner for tonight -she will keep you guessing for the rest of your life. Ibungo, charaga yengo ne! Haubra?

I grew up in multi-ethnic Serous, and it still haunts me, though I have not been to Serous since 1996. Being a Nepali and having countless Maitei friends, I still cherish a dream of visiting it again. Serous shares border with Burma's Chin Hill State, the remotest village, I suppose, for any Nepalese and Bengali, but its enduring culture, tradition and practices, in many ways, are immensely rich. Maiteis' culture, their dress and their etiquette must have lured many Nepalese (like me and my parents) to settle and live together with them. I love Maitei food as it so rich that there is no food on this planet as rich as Maiteis'. We all prepare and eat Maiteis' food in Kathmandu. My two-and-a-half decades long stay in Serous remains the core of my values and success; and I am sure many educated Nepalese, who left Serou as a result of the insurgency, do feel the same. The Practical High School, which churned the best products and are moving across the globe today, should remain as the backbone of the village. So, whoever wants to rename it and make it a model school in Manipur should cater education to the local students rather than create a model for outsiders. Undoubtedly, Minister Ranjeet Singh has done remarkable job in placing the village onto the track of development and growth. In many ways, it is a model village of Manipur today but he should be well aware of the needs of local Maiteis, Nepalese, Bangalis, Kukis, Zaus and Anals. After all, education is the key to success no matter where you go in search of greener pasture. I wish I were still in Serou.
