289-foot, 24-story modernist office building originally completed in 1924. Designed by Buchman & Kahn with a Neo-Classical masonry facade, it was re-clad in 2000 to a design by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. The new facade is clad in light-grey granite; the 2-story base has large, plate-glass storefronts and show-windows. The north facade on 45th Street is nine bays wide, and the east facade on the avenue has five bays, plus an extra 2-story bay on the south end hat contains the double-height, glassed-in main entrance. Above the base, each bay has paired windows of silver-blue glass. On the east facade the end-bay window pairs are spaced closer together, and on the north facade, the four eastern bays' windows are spaced closer together. The five western bays are set slightly back from the east half.
Above the 13th floor there is a small setback at the eastern half back to the level of the western bays, and there is a setback at the westernmost bay above the 11th floor. A full-floor setback above the 15th floor is topped on the east side by a sloping, peaked metal roof. Just to the west of this roof a building section rises up another three floors, and the west half of the tower continues, with setbacks above the 20th & 23rd floors.
The west elevation has five bays of single-windows at the north end, the first two dropping off at the setbacks. The south elevation has five bays of single-windows at the east end, the easternmost dropping off at the first setback. To the left there are two more bays of single-windows beginning at the upper floors, and a setback to the slightly-recessed west half of the building. This half, still clad in brown brick, has eight bays of single-windows. The ground floor is occupied by Paul Stuart clothing store.
