  • My husband was born on Quaker isl. Chester, n.s. in 1937; as was his 6 older siblings. His parent's kept the lighthouse, until it burned, when my husband was several months old. There were also twins born and BURIED on the island. They froze to death, while their mother, in labour, tried to row to shore for help. I am not sure where these twins came in the family! Someone told us that another one was also buried there, but we are not sure of that. The children are all passed away now, the last one last year. We were out in 1962, and only a pole was there with a light, but his Mom's little old barn was there then. That was her first and last trip out there since the house burned. She passed away in 1963. at the age of 54. she was 16 when the first was born and 28 when the last was born. A busy Mom, on an island, and by herself, caring for the light and family, most of the time alone! Jan 2012
  • What an extraordinary story! Was the lighthouse rebuilt? I and my sister lived in Chester from July 1940 until April 1944 and I recall the island with the lighthouse. But my memory may be confusing that with pictures that I may have seen. I might add that we lived with Dr. Woodroffe who frequently had to go to the islands at night to deal with medical emergencies. • Yes, I too remember Quaker Island, we used to look at it from mainland Chester, especially when the yachts were racing.
  • Genevieve, What a fascinating story! Thank you so much for adding to our history.
