Ir. An Seipéilín Beag ‘the little chapel or church’ (lesser)

Discussion

Sheepland Beg and Sheepland More are recorded as Shefflondebegg and Cheapollanmore in 1549. In the form Shefflondebegg, -ff- is clearly an error for –pp- and the English element Sheepland is obviously a corruption of the Irish word seipéilín ‘little chapel or church’. Writing in 1878 O’Laverty (i 179) informs us that in the townland of Sheepland More there is ‘a hill named Mullaghban (‘the white hill’) which is said to be so named from white friars who had at that place a monastery. There have been found in the vicinity of Mullaghban graves lined with stones, and cairns of stones’. On the northern boundary of Sheepland Beg there is a hamlet named Chapeltown. The townland of Sheepland More also contains a holy well known as ‘Saint Patrick’s Well’ while in Sheepland Beg there is a natural rock cleft known as ‘Saint Patrick’s Road’.

  • St Michael's Park incorrect - it does not extend to the seashore - it is a tiny group of modern houses just off the Amain A2 road to Strangford.from Ardglass.
