50 Laguna was built for single working people in 1928 in the "Art Deco Moderne" style, so it comprises mainly studio apartments. The lobby still has a black and white marble floor beneath the carpet. The original grand and ornate wrought iron "trellis" lanterns (which flanked the front door) were removed some time in the 1990s and were replaced by rather ordinary contemporary figures. 16 Laguna was built next door and consists of 1 bedroom apartments. It closely matches 50 Laguna in style. The original site of these buildings was a small but beautiful Victorian house where 16 sits and a large play yard where 50 stands today. The house and picket fence surrounding the property can be seen in photographs from as early as 1866.
