In 1827, Boston’s Bishop Fenwick noticed the growing numbers of Catholics in Rhode Island, and determined that it was time to send a priest. A year later, Father Robert Woodley chose to establish a chapel in Newport due to the large number of Irish working at Ft. Adams. That same year, the Boston diocese bought an old schoolhouse located at this site to serve as a chapel, and soon Catholic masses were held sporadically. The congregation converted part of the land here into a cemetery. Today, all that remains of this original parish are the tombstones.
