beach, lake, scuba diving facility / area, manmade lake, pond, ice swimming place
This is a man-made small groundwater-fed pond that used to be a gravel pit.
Vetokannas was used as a local swimming spot for decades but it was completely rebuilt and opened for public in 2012. However, the premises weren't completely ready until 2014.
Officially the maximum depth is 6 meters and average depth just 2,2 meters.
However, in the past some divers reported depths of up to 18 meters, so that’s either an urban myth, misunderstanding or this was the case with the pond before the recent transformation.
NB! Avoid diving during busiest times of day. Notify lifeguards if they are on duty. Always be aware of what is happening around you, and make sure no one's safety is compromised because of your diving. Preferrably always have a diving partner with you.
Despite pond’s diminutive size, Vetokannas has proven to be incredibly popular site. If you want to avoid swimming amidst blue-green algae, then this is your place.
There is a pier and pontoon platforms where it is safe to jump in water.
There are outdoor exercising equipment on the premises and two beach volleyball courts.
Winter swimming is possible for those paying the annual fee of 75€ (plus 30€ one-time-fee for collecting your electronic key). Keycard can be picked up from Myyrmäki public swimming pool at Myyrmäenraitti 4, 01600 Vantaa (tel. +358 9 8393 5544).
Because its all groundwater seeping through the layers of sand and gravel, the water quality is usually excellent (and would be even better if people would stop using copious amounts of sunblock). Likewise the visibility tends to be good. The deeper you dive, the more refreshing the temps! :)
Dogs are welcome to swim in their own designated spot in Vantaa river which is conveniently located some 40 meters from Vetokannas.
There is also a designated fishing spot in Vantaa river for those who fish with a rod and a line only (which is of course free in Finland).
If you want to do some serious angling, Pitkäkoski rapids (all 1,1km of them) are only a stone throw away from Vetokannas.
If it’s the right season and you are lucky it is possible to catch rainbow trout, brown trout, atlantic salmon and grayling, for example.
If you don't have a fishing licence, you can collect one from a near-by Pitkäkoski maja cafe.
Fishing licence prices in Pitkäkoski rapids vary from 10€ (1 day for out-of-towners) to 40€ (annual licence for out-of-towners). Helsinkians can fish year-round for 13€.
New fishing legislation should be effective in the beginning of 2016 when anyone aged 18-64 can fish with a single lure everywhere in the country with the proposed prices of 39€ annually, 12€ per week or 5€ per day.
City of Vantaa is looking for a cafe entrepreneur in Vetokannas, so there will likely be a cafe on the premises by summer 2015.
Until then, take a short walk to legendary Pitkäkosken maja (open Tuesday to Sunday - EXCEPT on rainy days) which has an excellent cafe with on-site baked goods and immediate access to ski trails during winter season.
