Turanj

Turanj is a tourist place in Zadar County, which is the path "Lungo mare" is connected to the municipal center, St. Philip and Jacob, and before that in the island of Babac. The town is named after the ruins of a medieval fortress.
An old town built on the remains of an venetian stronghold. It was quite an important fortress during several Turkish wars. It was burned to the ground several times and the population escaped to the islands. There is an 18th ct. church dedicated to Our Lady of mt. Carmel celebrated on July 16th. Turanj has the population of nearly 1800. The village payed a heavy toll in human lives during the WW2. Also,it has been under attack during the Croatian war for Independence (1991 - 1995). It gave one young life at the altar of the homeland: Danijel Mandić was killed in action in 1992.
The village nowadeys is experiencing a very fast growth in apartment housing building which is destroying it's beautiful surroundings. The major industry is the large greenhouse of MBM company. The most common last names are: Pedisić, Santini, Budanović, Mandić...
