A modern five-story City Hall was built on this site in 1967-68.
After completion, it was discovered that was directly on top of the Hayward fault, and was unsafe. The building was mostly vacated after 1992, except for a small city jail in the basement, and was completely demolished in 2004.

  • Prior to the demolition of the old city hall, the city hall offices were relocated to 3300 Capitol Avenue. A new city hall has not yet been built. The allegedly "new one about 200 feet to the north" is actually the police station.
