The locality was settled in the time before Christ by the Celts. Remnants of their fortified oppidum is in close proximity. Greater development occurred after the estate was bought by entrepreneur Franz Ringoffer II family, great manufacturers of wagons, locomotives and other machinery. They founded here the castle and a large Velkopopovický brewery producing beer "Kozel" (sort of beer, engl. He-goat) in i1874. The property belonged to Ringhoffers were also near castles Štiřín, Lojovice, Kostelec and Kamenice, where is their mausoleum.
