In 1875 the Duke's Palace and large part of its grounds was leased for 500 years to the Mayor, Aldermen and Burgesses of Nottingham to be used as a Public Museum and Art Gallery. It was opened in 1878 by the Prince (later King Edward VII) and Princess of Wales and Queen Alexandra. The museum to-day houses various exhibitions and also details the history of the castle as well as Nottingham itself. The building is a Grade I listed building.
