The Breslau Siegesdenkmal (Victory Monument) was built in 1874 and designed by Alexis Langer to commemorate the Prussian victories over Denmark in 1864, Austria in 1866, and France in 1870 and 1871. It had the form of a 19-foot neo-Gothic tower made of sandstone atop a pedestal decorated with carvings of soldiers. The whole thing rested on a platform with carved Neogothic balustrades. The entrance to the monument was flanked by two captured French cannons. It was demolished after 1945, when Breslau was annexed to Poland and renamed Wrocław, because it was a symbol of Germany. Today only the stairs and scattered pieces of the monument remain.
