John Sherwin was built in 1958, after a little over 20 years of service she entered long term layup in Duluth, MN November 16, 1981, she was used for some storage, & in 1998 there were rumors of her being converted to a self unloader and returned to service, but that did not happen, & still she sat.
In 2006 hope returned, she was inspected for service, but it was decided that she be used for grain storage in Chicago, IL, & for the first time in over 20 years she left the port of Duluth.
While in Chicago, she was used in Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight", at about the 1hr 42mn mark, they digitally removed her name, but it's her. The following scene may be intended to be in her hull.
In 2008, 10 years since the first rumors of a possible return to service, hope returned again, stronger this time. She left Chicago under tow & went to Bay Shipbuilding in Sturgeon Bay, WI. She was to be re-powered, the engine room was to be converted to diesel & have a self-unloading system installed, she was to return to active duty in 2010. Yet just a short few months after arriving Bay Shipbuilding & work had started, the plans were put on hold again, the economy tanked big time. Sometime later she was moved from Sturgeon Bay to the remote Interlake Steamship Dock in DeTour, MI. There she sits without an engine/propulsion or propeller, her fate in a haze, but despite her many letdowns, some say there is still a chance if the needs arises.
