Located east of the city of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, on Highway 17, this reserve house approximately 1200 natives of the Ojibway tribe.

The reserve itself is 20km x 20km, although only the 20 km stretch on Highway 17 is inhabited.

The reserve is known for its annual Powwow in August, a convenience store name 'Big Arrow' with two massive arrows in front of it, a bingo hall named 'Garden River Bingo', and Ojibway Park, a camping facility with a shallow beach named 'Laughing Water Beach'.

There are only two major highways to get from Western Ontario to Eastern Ontario: Hwy. 11 and Hwy. 17. One must pass Garden River First Nations Reserve to get from the city of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and the city of Sudbury, Ontario via Hwy. 17.
