In 1941 Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz purchased their first home, a five-acre “ranch” (or “ranchito,” as Arnaz referred to it) in the then-rural Chatsworth district of Los Angeles. They christened it “Desilu,” a combination of their own names that would later become world-famous as the name of their production company. By the late 1940s, Ball and Arnaz still had no children. And Ball came to attribute this—at least in part—to the fact that they had been married by a judge and not in a church. In 1949 the two were married again at Our Lady of the Valley Church in Canoga Park, California. Ball and Arnaz continued to live at their Desilu ranch with daughter Lucie (b. 1951) and son Desi, Jr. (b. 1953) until the family moved to Beverly Hills in 1954.

(Confusion as to the actual location of the ranch is cleared up through the following blog post: sanfernandovalleyblog.blogspot.com/2014/06/bttf-22-sear... )

  • I thought the Desilu Ranch was located on Devonshire where Chaminade and Egremont schools are now. I stayed with my parents as caregiver not far from there for 7 years recently. The ranch would've been torn down around the time mom and dad moved to Northridge in 1976. Various websites have the ranch located somewhere on Devonshire between Oso and Corbin.
  • Oso and Corbin sounds correct. Because, their address was 19100 Devonshire Ave, Chatsworth. Yet, that address has a wall in front of the whole block. On the other side of the wall is a luxury gated community. Awwwwwww......history erased. Shucks!!
  • The address was 19700 and the house is located near the corner of Devonshire and Corbin. Chaminade is located next to the house. The house is located on Tuba Street now and is still there.
  • The actual location has been extensively researched and posted in the above referenced blog post. I have read the available information over and over and have come to the conclusion that the property, as marked, represents the approximate boundaries of the 5 acre ranch.
