Fort Gillem is a U.S. Army military base located in Forest Park, Georgia, on the southwest edge of Atlanta. Founded in 1941, it is a satellite part of nearby Fort McPherson. The base houses many different supply and support units. It employs 456 active duty personnel, 1,663 Army reservist, and 1,667 civilians. In 1973, its 1,465 acres were annexed by Forest Park. Lieutenant General Russel L. Honoré makes his home nearby.
On May 13, 2005, the Base Realignment and Closure commission recommended that this base be closed. Fort Gillem was officially closed down September 15th, 2011,it was reduced to a military enclave.
The Forest Park/Fort Gillem Local Redevelopment Authority (LRA) primary development objectives are to stimulate economic growth, create a high-value redevelopment plan; improve education, quality of life and the perception of the area and ensure one community. Using these objectives, the redevelopment plan outlines land uses and parcels to take advantage of the opportunity to create significant, high-paying jobs. The redevelopment plan adopted by the Forest Park/Fort Gillem LRA is primarily light industrial and logistical, with a smattering of commercial, residential and retail space.
