A 15-minute drive west of Iligan City will take you to Brgy. Sta. Elena and the Bayanihan sa Iligan Village. The place has a population of more than a thousand households, with complete pre-school, elementary and high school. It has a public market and some commercial stores privately owned by families. When Typhoon Sendong struck Iligan City last December 2011, Sta. Elena became one of the evacuation sites that resettled thousands of Sendong survivors. They made use of tents given by international organizations as temporary shelter.

Through the leadership of Mayor Lawrence Cruz, Sta. Elena was declared the relocation site for township development. An area that was once a rice field with coconut trees and banana shrubs, it was a grazing haven for cows, carabaos, goats and horses. A very rural setting, only a handful of dilapidated shacks can be seen around. The hilly 15-hectare land (a property owned by the National Steel Corporation) was idle for many years. Today, it accommodates homes for more than one thousand families, the biggest relocation site in the history of local and affordable housing.

City to turn over 190 housing units for Sendong survivors on June 15

Tuesday 12th of June 2012 TweetFacebookYahooEmailShareThis ILIGAN CITY, Lanao del Norte, June 12 (PIA) -- Concerned offices of the city government of Iligan are striving for the completion of additional 190 housing units at Bayanihan Village - relocation site at Sta. Elena for Sendong beneficiaries by June 15, 2012.

This is in response to the directive of Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz that there should be housing units turned over to tropical storm Sendong survivors every two weeks.

Pearly Mantos of the City Social Welfare and Development Office, who is also a member of the Beneficiary Selection Arbitration and Awards Committee, revealed that included in the list are several internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Tambacan Elementary School, this city.

Thus, in connection with the move, City Councilor Providencio Abragan, Jr., Sangguniang Panglungsod of Iligan, said the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) shall make a recommendation that would include in the danger zone those that are residing near the river at Tambacan, as support for the transfer of IDPs from the barangay concerned.

To date, there are 213 units already occupied by the settlers at the village, priorities are those whose houses were washed out by Sendong, according to Housing and Resettlement Officer Reynaldo Roque of the city government.

He added, that there would be 1,712 units as their target to complete the location that would accommodate families who are still at the shelter box using tents as their temporary shelter.

Meanwhile, a bunk house built by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), will be turned over on June 20 that will serve as temporary shelter of some 230 families who are using tents as their shelter. The bunk house is built within just the perimeter of the village, and later will be vacated as soon as these families will finally be settled at their permanent housing units in the village.

The IOM provides the materials for the construction while the city government offers the labor/ manpower to finish its target of 330 families to stay at the bunk house. (Melvin T. Anggot & Virgilio C. Garcia/CIO/LVGabule/PIA 10-LDN)

STA. ELENA, Iligan City, June 9 (PIA) -- A total of 23 families, who were survivors during the onslaught tropical storm Sendong, received the keys to their new homes last May 30 at Bayanihan Village, Sta. Elena, this city.

The simple turnover was led by Lanao del Norte Governor Khalid Dimaporo who eagerly participated in the Bayani Challenge issued by Gawad Kalinga.

“Bayani Challenge is about people coming together and challenging the ‘bayani’ in them and bringing out the hero in every Filipino,” explained GK volunteer Management Officer Justin Cruz.

More than 800 provincial employees joined in building the 23 houses which started last April 9.

The Lanao del Norte contingent averages about 200 volunteers daily, composed of provincial employees, soldiers, police officers, and skilled construction workers.

The provincial LGU of Lanao del Norte was also the biggest contingent of volunteers to construct one cluster of houses. A cluster is composed of 23 two-storey houses.

The newly constructed Bayanihan Village in Iligan City is the biggest relocation site in the country.

“We are targeting 1,710 housing units. This site will surpass the Baseco relocation site which has about 1,000 units,” GK-Iligan Head Jake Gerona said.

Aside from receiving the keys, each family-recipient also received home starter packages which include one sack rice, canned goods, pails, grocery items, and balls for the kids.

“Despite our meager resources, we wanted to show Lanao del Norte will be there for Iligan City especially during their time of need. It’s a commitment that we made. It’s a commitment we must finish,” expressed Gov. Dimaporo.

Also present during the turn-over rite were the department heads of Lanao del Norte LGU and city officials from Iligan city government.

“We are thankful for the help of Lanao del Norte led by Gov. Dimaporo. This is a tangible proof they care for Iligan,” GK-Iligan Coordinator Gina Cruz said. (VNL/PIO-LDN/PIA)
