The original Chinook Centre opened in 1960 as an open-air complex, and was enclosed a few years later. In the mid-1960s, a competing mall called Southridge opened across the street. In 1974, both malls came under common ownership, and an expansion joined the two together into a single mall.

After more piecemeal expansions, the mall became very disjointed and dated. The mall underwent a massive reconstruction starting in 1998. While the renovations resulted in a more stylish and upscale mall, the increased rents squeezed out some smaller, locally owned businesses.
