In 1907, seven years after purchasing the property, the Franciscan Order of Catholic monks erected a monastery for young priests in training on this site. The four story structure was designed to resemble a medieval monastery complete with a center court, arches and cloisters. The monks lived a simple existence and wore robes and sandals while raising their own food from their garden. The monastery was used by the Franciscans until the 1960s.

In 1980, the non-profit, Our Lady of Angels Apartments Inc. obtained funding to convert the former monastery into a 133 unit, independent living home for the elderly and the disabled.
