ventilating shaft, 2013_construction
The new ventilation pipe (NVP) was built to replace the old VT-2, which served Units 3 and 4 of the plant. The need for replacing VT-2 arose due to the expiration of its operational lifespan and its obstruction to the construction of the New Safe Confinement (NSC) over the "Shelter" object.
The new ventilation pipe was put into operation on October 22, 2013. It is located at a safe distance from the NSC construction zone, allowing the work on the confinement to proceed without interference.
After the NVP was commissioned, the dismantling of the old VT-2 began. The work involved the sequential removal of seven sections, totaling about 330 tons. Dismantling started on October 31, 2013, and was fully completed between the end of October and early December 2013. The work was carried out under challenging radiation conditions, and the fragmentation of the dismantled sections was completed by February 4, 2014.
