Built by Maharaja Sawai Jaisingh II (AD 1699-1743); is one of the several astronomical observatories made by him. 4 main Yantras :1)SAMRAT, 2)JAIPRAKASH, 3)RAM & 4)MISRA.
The various abstract structures (yantras) within the Jantar Mantar are, in fact, instruments that were used for keeping track of celestial bodies. Jantar Mantar is a timekeeper of celestial bodies. The Jantar Mantar of Delhi is only one of the five observatories built by Sawai Jai Singh II, the other four being located at Jaipur, Varanasi, Ujjain and Mathura.
The Jantar Mantars may have fallen into disuse but they remain an integral part of India's scientific heritage.
This monument is situated just a stroll away on the Parliament Street, New Delhi.
Timings : Daily 9.00am - 7.00pm.
Tickets available (Rs.5 for Indian Nationals) at the gate.
