Dudeştii-Vechi

Romania / Timis / Dudestii Vechi /

Dudeştii-Vechi (also known as Stár Bišnov (bg), Óbesenyö(hu)) is a village from the western part of Timis county.
The village is a multicultural place: it is inhabited by bulgarians (called paulicians or pavlikians) - the majority population, romanians, hungarians, gypsies, serbians, germans, ukraineans and slovaks.
The pavlikians came here in 1738, from the northern part of Bulgaria, to escape from the turkish yoke. At that time the village already existed but it was a deserted uninhabited place, so the pavlikeans settled in and started to build their new homes.
Currently there are about 4000 inhabitants in Dudestii-Vechi.

  • When the catholic Bulgarians(Paulicians,Paulikians,Pavlikians)settled in the spring of 1738 the deserted place called O-Besenyo,Charles VI was Holy Roman Emperor(1711 to 1740),Maria Theresa's reign did not start until 1740.The previous inhabitants didn't leave much after their departure and according to a surviving document from that time the only structure left beside some hovels, was a half standing tower demolished later by the Bulgarians.
  • Thanks for your comment, Nandor, it helped improving the description of Dudestii-Vechi (I removed the historical facts which were not entirely correct).
