The Saucer Magnolia, a hybrid plant, is the most commonly planted magnolia in horticulture. The hybrid was created in France in 1820 by a retired cavalry officer in Napoleon's army.

This Saucer Magnolia creates an impressive sight in late March to early April when it is a mass of white flowers. The flowers arrive before the leaves; this is a tree that signals that Spring has arrived.
