  • HISTORY OF MEDHANE ALEM H. S.- "ከዚህ ክማይሞተው የስው ልጅ ማደሪያ ስፍራ ይግቡ!" The Early Development -- 1923 to 1954 EC. by: Ato Dagnaw Gebru A year following his coronation in 1923 Ethiopian Calendar (EC), His imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I founded Medhane Alem School, situated in the north western part of Addis Ababa. It was the fourth modern school after Menilik, Teferi Makonnen and Empress Mennen School for Girls. It opened its doors as boarding school, significantly on Emperor's first coronation anniversary, on Tikimt 27 1924 EC (October 17 1931) for 85 orphans to pursue academic and vocational training mainly in shoe making and furniture production. The then famous architect, Lig Haile mariam Gezmu, was named the principal of the school. There were five Ethiopian, four French teachers and a large contingent of auxiliary staff --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Medeshoch check out the following links to form association, read history and see old pictures of Medish. http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=77434646940 http://www.ethionetworks.com/Medhane_Alem/Medhane_Alem_History.html http://www.ethionetworks.com/Medhane_Alem/Photo.html I only went 9th grade there but Medish was a place of hang outs to watch local Kebelle soccer matches or other events in the auditorium. Does anyone remember Gebsemaw? he was school master I think. My other favorite school is General Wingate. I hope both schools will go thru renovation to restore the old glory for the new generation.

  • I was at Medhane Alem during 1975 - 1978 EC and enjoyed every day at my school. Great teachers like Dress Geneme (Mathematics, Grade 11 and 12, Love you so much), Arefeaine (English, Grade 10, who is to used address every one in the class from day one by name, I do not how he does), Hailu (Mathematics, Grade 10), Shumbeza (Mathematics,Grade 9) and Kiriba (English, Grade 9) which I remember fondly and some bad teaches which I do not want to name. During our time the class size was between 80 and 90 students in a class, I pray it has improved. Thanks to Medish, I now have a PhD in chemistry and am a lecturer.

  • Chuchu, I am very impressed of your memories of your favorite teachers from 1975-... clearly shows you were a good student and the teachers you mentioned have left you with indelible impressions on you. I agree teachers can really make or break students. I hope now with your lecturer responsibility, you strive to be a kind of influence that can encourage students to do their best. God bless you, may God bless Medish and may God bless Ethiopia!
