The Vischer Ferry Nature & Historic Preserve includes sections of the original Erie Canal, first completed in 1825, and improved many times until it was replaced by the New York State Barge Canal in 1918. The new self propelled boats, tugs and barges of the day didn't need to be pulled by mules anymore, so there was no need for a a towpath next to the canal. Newer craft could also negotiate more open water, so the natural Mohawk Riverbed was used instead of a fully man-made ditch.

The Vischer Ferry Nature & Historic Preserve also includes the New York State Vischer Ferry Bird Conservation Area.
