OM Muruga !!! .
The Legend is that Lord Murugan was upset with his parents as he was not given the fruit of knowledge and he was denied it as it was given away to his brother lord Vinayaka; that both of them had to go around the world to get the fruit of knowledge.
Vinayaka went around his parents and said they were the world to him;
but Muruga actualy went around the world as he respected his parents words and thus reached later than his brother.The dive fruit was given to Vinayaka.
Muruga ran away in anger as he felt let down. So Palani is called so as they said, "you your self are the fruit" ( Pazhamnee --> Pazham=Fruit(பழம்)+ Nee=you(நீ) meaning you are the fruit)

  • Great article. Very informative. The history and the story behind this famous temple is very well known to most of the devotees. There are small elements of this temple that many are not aware of. For example, the name 'Palani' is derived from the terms 'Palam' and 'Nee' (meaning 'You are a fruit'). He was referred to this by his mother Parvati to pacify him after he flew down from Mount Kailash. And very recently, we had the Aadi Ammavasya, which is a very rare day renowned for performing rituals for the dead. This day is closely associated with God Muruga, as a result, 1000s of devotees flock the temple on this particular day and take a dip in the holy river near by.
