village, place with historical importance, municipality
Žleby village is located in the district of Kutná Hora, 80 km from capital city of Prague, and about 7 km from historical town of Čáslav. It has about 1,300 inhabitants. Part of the village are also small settlements Kamenné Mosty, Markovice and Zehuby. The dominant building in the centre of the village is romantic Žleby castle.
The first written mention of the village dates back to 1278. The name Žleby is from the valley of the river Doubrava. It created a deep trough here.
Žleby was promoted to a small town in 1356, when it was held by Emperor Charles IV. and a silver lion with a gold crown, tongue and gold claws in a black shield was put into their arms. The documents about that, however, have not survived. A similar feature is used by the municipality at present.
